Useful Information

Plant Bio

Tillandsia, commonly known as air plants, are a fascinating genus of epiphytic plants that are well-known for their ability to grow without soil. These unique plants, belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, are native to the Americas and are found in a variety of habitats, from rainforests to deserts. They typically have narrow, tapering leaves and produce colorful, often tubular flowers.

The genus name Tillandsia honors the Swedish physician and botanist, Elias Tillandz.

Light: Tillandsia prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Tillandsia absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves, not their roots. They need to be misted or soaked regularly, depending on the species and the humidity of their environment. Generally, misting 2-3 times a week is sufficient, but in drier climates or during warmer months, they may need to be soaked for 15-20 minutes once a week. After misting or soaking, gently shake off excess water to prevent rot.

Air Circulation: Good air circulation is essential for Tillandsia. Avoid placing them in enclosed spaces or where air circulation is limited.

Mounting: Tillandsia can be mounted on various surfaces, such as driftwood, cork bark, or rocks. Use wire, fishing line, or glue to attach them securely. Avoid covering the base of the plant, as this can trap moisture and lead to rot.

Fertilising: Tillandsia can benefit from occasional fertilising. Use a diluted bromeliad or orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Temperature: Tillandsia prefer moderate temperatures. They are not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures.

Humidity: Tillandsia can tolerate a range of humidity levels, but they generally prefer moderate to high humidity.

Flowering: Many Tillandsia species produce colorful flowers, typically in shades of pink, purple, or red. Flowering is often triggered by changes in light or humidity.

Toxicity: Tillandsia are not known to be toxic to humans or pets.
