Useful Information

Plant Bio

Cyrtosperma johnstonii, often called the Giant Taro or sometimes simply Cyrtosperma, is a large, tropical aroid prized for its dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves and impressive size. It's native to the South Pacific Islands and is a popular choice for collectors and those wanting a statement plant. It belongs to the Araceae family.

The genus name Cyrtosperma comes from the Greek words kyrtos (curved) and sperma (seed), referring to the shape of the seeds. Johnstonii honours Sir Harry Johnston, a British explorer, administrator, and naturalist.

Light: Cyrtosperma johnstonii thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can lead to slower growth and less vibrant colouration. A position near a window with filtered light, or a room with plenty of ambient light, is ideal.

Water: This plant enjoys consistently moist soil, but it doesn't like to be waterlogged. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while letting it dry out too much can cause the leaves to wilt and brown.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir is a good choice. A chunky mix, like what you'd use for orchids or other epiphytic plants, can also be beneficial.

Fertilising: Feed your Cyrtosperma johnstonii with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop feeding during the autumn and winter when growth slows down.

Temperature: Cyrtosperma johnstonii prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18-27°C (65-80°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures. Avoid placing it near draughts or heating/cooling vents.

Humidity: This tropical plant enjoys high humidity. Regularly misting the leaves, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water can be very beneficial. Lower humidity can lead to crispy leaf edges.

Important Note on Size: Cyrtosperma johnstonii can grow quite large, so make sure you have enough space for it. It may eventually outgrow its pot and require repotting.

Toxicity: Like many aroids, Cyrtosperma johnstonii is toxic if ingested, so keep it away from pets and small children. The sap can also be irritating to the skin.
