Useful Information

Plant Bio

Calathea 'White Fusion' is a sought-after houseplant, celebrated for its visually arresting, oval-shaped leaves. The foliage displays a lively green base, intricately marked with patterns of white and paler green, creating a truly captivating spectacle. As a Calathea cultivar, it resides within the Marantaceae family, a group often called Prayer Plants due to the daily movement of their leaves.

The name "Calathea" has roots in Greek, where the word "kalathos" translates to basket, a reference to the form of the plant's flowers. "White Fusion" aptly describes the characteristic white and pale variegation that appears to merge seamlessly with the leaf's green backdrop.

Light: Calathea 'White Fusion' flourishes in bright, but not direct, light. Direct sun can damage the delicate leaves and diminish the vibrancy of the variegation. A position near a window with filtered light, or a room with abundant ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Consistent moisture is key for this Calathea, but avoid water logging the soil. Allow the top portion of the soil to dry out just a little between waterings. When watering, do so thoroughly, ensuring any excess water can drain away. Too much water can lead to root problems, while insufficient watering can result in brown, brittle edges on the leaves.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is vital. A combination of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir is a suitable choice. Avoid mixes that hold onto too much moisture.

Fertilising: Provide your Calathea 'White Fusion' with a diluted balanced liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the active growing period (spring and summer). Cut back or stop feeding during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Calathea 'White Fusion' is happiest in warm temperatures, roughly between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Keep it away from draughts and nearby heating or cooling appliances. It cannot tolerate frost.

Humidity: Calatheas, including 'White Fusion', benefit greatly from high humidity levels. Regularly misting the leaves, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a tray of pebbles with water can prove very helpful. Dry air can cause the leaf edges to become brown and crispy.

Toxicity: Calatheas are generally considered safe for pets, although it's always wise to keep any houseplant out of reach of inquisitive animals and young children.
