Useful Information

Plant Bio

Fockea edulis is part of the Apocynaceae family, its’ native range is SW. & S. Cape Prov. to KwaZulu-Natal. It is a climbing tuberous geophyte, growing primarily in the subtropical biome.

It grows in a well drained soil (containing plenty of grit) with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to 60cm in diameter, and the vines reach up to 4m in height. Fockea edulis produces small white or green-copper coloured flowers in late summer and can be reproduced from seeds or by cuttings. The caudex grows faster when covered with soil. Collectors often plant the caudex above the soil to give the impression that it’s actually a miniature, wide-trunked tree but if you have a young Fockea plant, do not plan on exposing the caudex until it’s fully established. F.edulis is semi-deciduous; it will shed its leaves in the winter and relies on stored water for a semi-dormant period.

Genus name is after Charles Focke, 1802-1856, a Dutch botanist, collecting especially in Surinam. Specific epithet means ‘edible’ in Latin; it is a traditional food source for native populations in South Africa, however, it is a lengthy process to ensure the plant is safe for consumption so I wouldn’t recommend eating it.

Pot: ø 8.5cm.

Height: Approximately 15cm from base of pot.

Light: Bright indirect light, meaning the plant sees the sun for 0-4 hours per day - this could be through trees or a translucent curtain, it’s important for the plant to see the sky in order to thrive. Avoid intense afternoon sun by sheltering this plant below a larger plant.

Water: Allow the potting mix to dry out completely in between waterings then water thoroughly. Keep almost completely dry in winter.

Potting mix: Cacti or succulent potting mix is ideal. You can amend our regular potting mix with sand, pumice or horticultural grit up to 50% to improve drainage. Re-pot every 2-3 years.

Fertilising: These plants are not heavy feeders, you could dilute fertiliser to half strength and feed monthly if you wish to give it a boost.

Temperature: 21-26˚C.

Humidity: 40-60%.

Fockea edulis is toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
