Useful Information

Plant Bio

Hoya sp. Sabah is a captivating climbing or trailing vine prized for its beautiful and often fragrant flowers. This particular Hoya, originating from Sabah, Malaysia, is sought after by collectors for its unique characteristics, which can vary depending on the specific clone. Generally, it features attractive foliage and clusters of star-shaped flowers. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family.

The genus name Hoya honours the English botanist Thomas Hoy. "sp." is an abbreviation for "species," indicating that this is a Hoya species from Sabah, but the specific species name may not be formally described or widely agreed upon.

Light: Hoya sp. Sabah prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can lead to fewer flowers and slower growth. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings. Hoyas are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. It's often better to err on the side of slightly underwatering than overwatering.

Potting mix: A well-draining potting mix is essential. A mix designed for orchids or other epiphytic plants, or a standard houseplant mix amended with perlite and orchid bark, is a good choice.

Fertilising: Feed your Hoya sp. Sabah with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Hoya sp. Sabah prefers typical room temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant.

Humidity: While Hoyas can tolerate average household humidity, they often appreciate slightly higher levels. Regularly misting the leaves or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water can be beneficial, especially during dry periods.

Flowering: Hoya sp. Sabah is grown primarily for its flowers. The blooms often appear in clusters and can be quite fragrant. Providing the right light and care conditions will encourage flowering.

Support: As a vining plant, Hoya sp. Sabah benefits from having a support to climb on, such as a trellis or moss pole. It can also be grown in a hanging basket and allowed to trail.

Toxicity: Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic, but it's always best to keep any houseplant out of the reach of pets and small children.
