Plant Bio

Medinilla magnifica, commonly known as the Rose Grape or Showy Medinilla, is a truly spectacular tropical epiphyte prized for its large, pendulous flower clusters and attractive foliage. This evergreen shrub features large, dark green, prominently veined leaves and produces stunning pink or coral-colored flowers that hang in panicles, often resembling clusters of grapes. It belongs to the Melastomataceae family.

The genus name Medinilla honors José de Medinilla y Pineda, the governor of the Mariana Islands in the 19th century. Magnifica means "magnificent" or "splendid," aptly describing the plant's impressive floral display.

Light: Medinilla magnifica thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may inhibit flowering. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when you do water, ensuring any excess drains away. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while allowing the plant to dry out too much can cause leaf drop and bud drop.

Potting mix: A well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix is essential. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is a good choice.

Fertilising: Feed your Medinilla magnifica with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: Medinilla magnifica prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18-24°C (65-75°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures and draughts.

Humidity: This tropical plant appreciates higher humidity. Using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water can be very helpful. Low humidity can lead to leaf drop and bud drop.

Flowering: Medinilla magnifica typically blooms in the spring and summer. Providing the right light, temperature, and humidity conditions will encourage flowering. After flowering, prune back the spent flower stalks to encourage new growth.

Toxicity: Medinilla magnifica is not known to be toxic to humans or pets.

Returns

We guarantee our plants 14 day from receipt. We guarantee to send happy and healthy plants, however, it is your responsibility to care for them and we cannot be held responsible for neglect or mis care. Please send us a picture within 24 hours of receiving your plant and we'll help you out with your issue.

If returning your order, please keep all original packaging and use this to send the plant back to us. This will ensure the plant is kept as safe as possible on its return.

To allow the plant to acclimatise in its new home, there should be no repotting of the plant for a minimum of 14 days after receipt. If any plant has been repotted or a cutting has been taken then we are not able to accept returns.

We are happy to replace your plant if it is very badly damaged in transport. The loss of a leaf in transport on a healthy plant should not generally be cause for any concern. We cannot give a refund for snapped leaves.
