Useful Information

Plant Bio

Tillandsia harrisii is a captivating air plant admired for its silvery-white foliage and vibrant blooms. This Tillandsia species features thick, fuzzy leaves covered in trichomes (tiny scales) that give it a silvery-white appearance. When in bloom, it produces a stunning inflorescence with bright pink or red bracts and tubular purple flowers. It belongs to the Bromeliaceae family.

The genus name Tillandsia honors the Swedish physician and botanist, Elias Tillandz. Harrisii is named after a plant collector named Harris, who is credited with discovering this species in Guatemala.

Light: Tillandsia harrisii prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A spot near a window with filtered light, or a room with ample ambient light, is ideal.

Water: Tillandsia harrisii absorbs moisture and nutrients through its leaves, not its roots. It needs to be misted or soaked regularly, depending on the humidity of its environment. Generally, misting 2-3 times a week is sufficient, but in drier climates or during warmer months, it may need to be soaked for 15-20 minutes once a week. After misting or soaking, gently shake off excess water to prevent rot.

Air Circulation: Good air circulation is essential for Tillandsia harrisii. Avoid placing it in enclosed spaces or where air circulation is limited.

Mounting: Tillandsia harrisii can be mounted on various surfaces, such as driftwood, cork bark, or rocks. Use wire, fishing line, or glue to attach it securely. Avoid covering the base of the plant, as this can trap moisture and lead to rot.

Fertilising: Tillandsia harrisii can benefit from occasional fertilising. Use a diluted bromeliad or orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Temperature: Tillandsia harrisii prefers moderate temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures.

Humidity: Tillandsia harrisii can tolerate a range of humidity levels, but it generally prefers moderate to high humidity.

Flowering: Tillandsia harrisii produces a stunning inflorescence with bright pink or red bracts and tubular purple flowers. Flowering is often triggered by changes in light or humidity.

Toxicity: Tillandsia harrisii is not known to be toxic to humans or pets.
